Vaginitis Treatment

Inflammation of the vaginal tissues is called vaginitis. This condition usually occurs when there is a change in the balance of the vagina, resulting in a yeast or bacterial infection. There are many possible causes of vaginitis and various options for treatment. At FEM Women’s Wellness, our gynecologists provide diagnosis and vaginitis treatment at our facility in the Carson City, Lake Tahoe and Reno, NV, area.

What Are the Causes and Symptoms of Vaginitis?

There are different types of vaginitis, which are caused by different conditions. Women may experience bacterial, yeast or trichomoniasis forms of vaginitis. Bacterial vaginitis is caused by an increase in the normal bacteria in the vagina – the cause is not always known. Yeast infections occur when there is an overpopulation of fungi in the vagina, causing inflammation. Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted parasite that causes an infection. Menopause and hormone fluctuations can also cause vaginitis.

Vaginitis can occur without symptoms, but if it is not treated, many women will have uncomfortable symptoms. The most common is a change in the vaginal discharge – the odor, amount and color can change. Patients with vaginitis also may experience pain during sex and urination. The vagina area may be itchy and light bleeding may occur.

Relief for Vaginitis Symptoms

If you have vaginitis symptoms, our GYN specialists can determine if you have an infection and what type. The treatment for vaginitis depends on the type of infection that has caused inflammation within the vagina. For bacterial vaginitis, treatment can include either oral medication or creams that are applied to the vaginal area. Yeast infections are usually treated with vaginal suppositories or creams. Trichomoniasis treatment usually is performed with metronidazole (Flagyl) or tinidazole (Tindamax) tablets. If your vaginitis is caused by low estrogen or hormone imbalances, you may benefit from hormone replacement therapy.

For women experiencing abnormal vaginal discharge or discomfort, vaginitis is a possibility. However, there are other conditions that can cause similar symptoms.
