Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome PCOS

Hormone balance is important for normal ovulation. The male hormone androgen is produced in the ovaries in small amounts, but if too much androgen is produced, it can interfere with ovulation. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an ovulation disorder that is caused by too much androgen. At FEM Women’s Wellness, we provide polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, diagnosis and treatment at our facility in the Reno, NV area.

During ovulation, the ovaries release eggs from small cysts that form on the outside of the ovary. These cysts are called follicles and are a normal part of ovulation. If there is too much androgen produced, the follicles may not release the eggs. This can result in multiple cysts on the ovaries and disruption of regular menstrual cycles, symptoms of PCOS.

What Causes PCOS?

Higher levels of androgen cause PCOS, which is often a genetic condition that runs in families. Women who have mothers or sisters with PCOS are more likely to experience this condition. PCOS symptoms can begin in the teen years when menstruation starts, or develop later in life. Other conditions can contribute to PCOS, such as obesity and insulin resistance.

Symptoms of PCOS

Women with PCOS may have irregular periods, which include erratic or missed periods. Due to more androgen, women with PCOS may experience facial hair, pattern baldness, excess body hair and skin tags. Obesity is common with PCOS, both contributing to symptoms and caused by hormone fluctuations. Infertility often accompanies PCOS due to the irregularity of menstruation.

PCOS diagnosis and treatment depends on the individual. For women who want to become pregnant, there are medications and lifestyle changes that can minimize symptoms and improve pregnancy chances. For those who want relief from irregular periods and other symptoms, birth control and other treatments may be recommended.
