During ovulation, the ovaries release eggs from small cysts that form on the outside of the ovary. These cysts are called follicles and are a normal part of ovulation. What Causes PCOS?
Higher levels of androgen cause PCOS, which is often a genetic condition that runs in families. Women who have mothers or sisters with PCOS are more likely to experience this condition. PCOS symptoms can begin in the teen years when menstruation starts, or develop later in life. Other conditions can contribute to PCOS, such as obesity and insulin resistance.
Symptoms of PCOS
Women with PCOS may have irregular periods, which include erratic or missed periods. Due to more androgen, women with PCOS may experience facial hair, pattern baldness, excess body hair and skin tags. Obesity is common with PCOS, both contributing to symptoms and caused by hormone fluctuations. Infertility often accompanies PCOS due to the irregularity of menstruation.
