Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Treatment

Bacteria that be introduced to the vagina during sexual intercourse or other activities can cause infections in the female reproductive organs. Pelvic inflammatory disease occurs when bacteria spread from the vagina into the other organs, such as the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. At FEM Women’s Wellness, our GYN specialists offer pelvic inflammatory disease treatment at our facility in Reno, NV.

Pelvic inflammatory disease, or PID, can be a painful condition that can cause permanent damage to the female reproductive system. The most common cause of PID is sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or diseases. Gonorrhea, chlamydia and other bacteria or infections can be introduced to the vagina and reach the uterus. Women who have multiple sexual partners or a partner with other partners are more likely to be exposed to sexually transmitted bacteria that can cause PID.

PID Symptoms and Complications

Pelvic inflammatory disease does not always have symptoms, but it can cause serious complications without treatment. While some women may only experience mild symptoms, these symptoms can become worse over time. Some signs of PID include:

  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Increased urge to urinate
  • Painful urination
  • Bleeding or spotting during or after sex
  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy or foul-odor vaginal discharge
  • Fever

Even if the symptoms are mild, anyone who has signs of PID should seek treatment. Pelvic inflammatory disease can cause scar tissue in the reproductive system, resulting in infertility, abscesses, chronic pain and ectopic pregnancy. Some complications from PID can be life-threatening.

Pelvic inflammatory disease treatment can be challenging. Antibiotics can be used to fight the bacteria that cause the disease, but treatment cannot reverse damage from previous infections. Women with PID may need ongoing treatment and support to prevent further infections and to manage long-term effects.

Prevention is the best option for avoiding PID. Not having unprotected sex and limiting the number of sexual partners can help prevent exposure to the bacteria that can cause STIs and PID.

At FEM Women’s Wellness, we have GYN specialists that can provide PID treatment to fight infection and reduce the risk of complications. For women living with PID long-term effects, we have mental health support and gynecological treatment.
