Sexually Transmitted Diseases

There are many infections and diseases that can be transmitted through sexual activity. Anyone who is sexually active should be aware of the health risks of these conditions and how to prevent spreading infections to their partners. Many sexually transmitted diseases can be effectively treated, but some can have serious health complications. At FEM Women’s Wellness, we offer treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and support for our patients at our facility in Reno/Lake Tahoe, NV.

Sexually transmitted diseases are extremely common. Most are caused by bacteria or viruses that are spread through contact with the genitals and associated fluids during sexual activity. It is estimated by the CDC that 20 million new STDs occur every year in the U.S. It is not necessary to have sexual intercourse to spread STDs – contact with the genitals and oral or genital fluids can result in transmitting diseases.

Symptoms of STDs

The most prevalent sexually transmitted infection is the human papillomavirus (HPV). This disease usually does not have any symptoms, but it can increase risks for infertility, cancer and other problems. All genders can transmit the disease, but women are at higher risk for cancer complications from HPV.

Other STDs may have symptoms that will alert you to a possible infection. Some of the possible symptoms of diseases such as gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes and chlamydia include:

  • Itching in the vaginal area
  • Painful urination
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Sores or blisters in the vaginal area

If you have any of these symptoms, you should see a gynecologist for diagnosis and treatment.

Prevention of STDs

While many STDs can be treated, there are some that have no cure. Prevention is key to reduce your chance of infection. The most effective option is abstinence from sexual activity with multiple partners, but there are other ways to reduce risk. Using protective devices like condoms can reduce risk. There are also vaccines available for HPV, which are best received at a young age to prevent infection.

If you are concerned about sexually transmitted diseases or infections, come see our GYN team at FEM Women’s Wellness. We can advise you on vaccines and prevention of STDs, and we offer effective treatment for those infected with an STD.
