Excision of Vulvar Lesions

When there is abnormal tissue in the vaginal or cervix area, these areas are referred to as lesions. Vulvar lesions can include polyps, sores, ulcers, tumors or other abnormal growths that can appear on the outside and inside of the vaginal region. Vulvar lesions usually are removed or destroyed to prevent any further complications such as cancer. At FEM Women’s Wellness, we perform excision of vulvar lesions at our facility in the Reno and Lake Tahoe, NV, area.

Some vulvar lesions may cause discomfort or other symptoms. The symptoms can vary depending on the type of lesion, but some common symptoms that occur include itching, pain, discharge and discolored tissue. Lesions on the vaginal or cervix tissues can be cancerous or precancerous and may lead to other health complications. It is often recommended to have these growths removed to prevent potential health problems.

Removal of Vulvar and Cervix Lesions

While some vaginal and cervix lesions may be destroyed, meaning cauterized or destroyed through other methods, others may need to be surgically removed. This is important when the lesion may have evidence of cancer or precancerous cells. The procedure is minimally invasive and can be performed under either local or general anesthesia, depending on the lesions being removed.

During the surgery, the abnormal tissue is carefully removed to prevent any unnecessary damage to the surrounding tissue. Sutures may be used to close the wound. The removed tissue may be tested or examined to determine if there are cancer or other abnormal cells present.

Recovery from an excision of vulvar lesions procedure depends on the extent of the surgery. It can take a few weeks for the wounds to heal – patients will be given post-operative instructions on what to avoid while healing, such as using tampons or sexual intercourse. Mild cramping and some bleeding are to be expected in the first few days after the procedure.

If you have abnormal tissue or lesions in the vaginal or cervix area, surgical removal may be recommended. To schedule an exam and GYN consultation, contact our team at FEM Women’s Wellness in the Carson City, Reno and Lake Tahoe, NV, area.
