NovaSure ablation is a fast and effective treatment for reducing heavy periods. There are several types of endometrial ablation procedures, but NovaSure offers the quickest method with minimal recovery required. The goal with NovaSure is to remove the endometrium, which is the inner uterine lining that causes heavy bleeding during periods. By destroying the lining, most women have much lighter periods, and some stop having periods at all.
How NovaSure Is Performed
NovaSure ablation does not require general anesthesia. It can be performed at our clinic, and the procedure only takes about five minutes. Patients will be comfortably positioned on a gynecological table and receive local anesthetic to numb the area. One of our experienced gynecologists will open the cervix and insert the NovaSure wand into the uterus. The wand releases a netting that expands against the interior wall of the uterus. Once in place, radiofrequency energy is delivered to the endometrium through the netting for about 90 seconds. This destroys the lining, which sheds after the procedures.
The most common side effect of the NovaSure ablation procedure is mild cramping which can be relieved with a heating pad or OTC pain relievers. Most women can go back to regular activities the next day, but sexual intercourse and inserting anything into the vagina should be avoided for 30 days.
