Urinary Incontinence Treatment

The loss of bladder control or urinary incontinence is a common problem among women. There are many factors that can contribute to bladder control issues, including physical changes, nerve damage, muscle weakness and other conditions. Uncovering the cause of urinary incontinence is the first step to determining the best treatment plan. Our GYN specialists at FEM Women’s Wellness offer diagnosis and urinary incontinence treatment at our clinic in the Reno and Lake Tahoe, NV, area.

What Causes Female Bladder Control Problems?

Urinary incontinence varies greatly in severity and frequency. For some women, it may be a small leakage when coughing, sneezing or laughing. For others, the urge to urinate is so strong that they may pee before they can reach a toilet. There are many different types of urinary incontinence and causes of this condition, including:

  • Stress incontinence – this is when urine leaks from pressure (sneezing, coughing) and may be due to reduced pelvic floor strength or aging factors
  • Functional incontinence – this occurs when you are unable to reach the toilet, not due to a urinary condition
  • Overflow incontinence – when the bladder does not completely empty, you may experience overflow or dribbling urination
  • Urge incontinence – this occurs when the urge to urinate is so strong that you involuntarily urinate or need to urinate frequently, with a wide range of possible causes

Urinary incontinence can be caused by a combination of factors. Many women have stress incontinence due to stretched or weakened pelvic muscles, but there can be other factors that make the condition worsen.

Urinary incontinence treatment can range from behavioral techniques and bladder training to medications, medical devices, therapies and even surgery, or a combination of these treatments. Since bladder control can involve physical, neurological and emotional causes, a comprehensive treatment plan may be required.
