Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths within the uterus. These growths, also called myomas or leiomyomas, are a common reproductive issue that occur in young and middle-aged women. For some, uterine fibroids can cause uncomfortable symptoms and may interfere with pregnancy. As part of our gynecology services at FEM Women’s Wellness, we offer uterine fibroids treatment at our medical clinic in the Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Reno, NV, area.
Causes and Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids
The exact cause of uterine fibroids is not known, but there are risk factors. Genetics and family history are the most common risk – if your mother or other female family members experienced uterine fibroids, you are more likely to have these growths. Hormone imbalance and other growth factors may also increase the risk of uterine fibroids.
Many women have uterine fibroids and never have any symptoms. Fibroids or myomas can be miniscule or large, ranging from one to multiple growths. The larger the fibroid, the more likely there will be symptoms, which may include:
- Long or heavy menstrual periods
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Increased frequency of urination
- Difficulty completely emptying the bladder
Uterine fibroids usually do not cause infertility, but they can impact pregnancy. Fibroids can increase the risk of miscarriage or fetus growth problems, but this is rare.
Relief from Uterine Fibroids
If you have uncomfortable uterine fibroid symptoms, there are treatment options. The first step is diagnosis of your fibroids, which can be accomplished with lab testing and imaging. The treatment recommended depends on the severity of your symptoms – many women with mild symptoms choose to forego treatment. For those with moderate to severe symptoms from fibroids, there are oral medications available, as well as minimally or non-invasive surgical options for removal. It is possible to remove fibroids and preserve the uterus for future pregnancies.
