Genetics and family history are the most common risk – if your mother or other female family members experienced uterine fibroids, you are more likely to have these growths. Hormone imbalance and other growth factors may also increase the risk of uterine fibroids.
Many women have uterine fibroids and never have any symptoms. Fibroids or myomas can be miniscule or large, ranging from one to multiple growths. The larger the fibroid, the more likely there will be symptoms, which may include:
- Long or heavy menstrual periods
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Increased frequency of urination
- Difficulty completely emptying the bladder
- Constipation
Uterine fibroids usually do not cause infertility, but they can impact pregnancy. Fibroids can increase the risk of miscarriage or fetus growth problems, but this is rare.

It is possible to remove fibroids and preserve the uterus for future pregnancies.
