How Nexplanon Implants Work
Nexplanon is a small, flexible implant that is placed under the skin. The device is a thin stick that is less than two inches in length. The implant is usually inserted under the skin on the upper arm – usually the non-dominant arm. The procedure can be completed in just a few minutes. The skin is numbed with a local anesthetic and then the implant is quickly inserted under the skin and the small incision is closed.
Nexplanon releases progesterone, a hormone that helps prevent pregnancy. This is the same hormone that is used in other types of birth control. The big difference with Nexplanon is that it reduces the chance of forgetting a pill or appointment for a shot. Once the implant is in place, you do not need to do anything to prevent pregnancy for up to three years, at which time it must be removed.
The Nexplanon birth control implant is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. If you decide you are ready to become pregnant, the implant can be removed quickly and easily at our office. Most women are able to become pregnant within a few months of having the implant removed if there are no other fertility issues.
