Hysteroscopy

When there are concerns about abnormalities inside the uterus, an exam of the uterine tissue may be needed. To look inside the uterus, a tool called a hysteroscope is used in hysteroscopy procedures. As part of our gynecology services at FEM Women’s Wellness, our GYN specialists perform diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy procedures at our state-of-the-art clinic in the Reno and Lake Tahoe, NV, area.

What Is Hysteroscopy?

When a patient has irregular periods, heavy menstrual periods or infertility, an inspection of the uterine tissue may be needed to determine the cause. Hysteroscopy is the common method used to view the inside of the uterus. The procedure is foremost diagnostic, but it can also be operative if there are abnormalities found in the uterus that need to be removed. Hysteroscopy may also be used to locate or remove an IUD.

During hysteroscopy procedures, the patient is placed on the gynecology exam table with her feet in the stirrups. Anesthesia is not usually needed for diagnostic hysteroscopy, but operative procedures may use local anesthesia. The cervix may need to be dilated to allow the insertion of the hysteroscope. The hysteroscope has a light and video camera that are used to inspect the uterine lining for any abnormalities.

If polyps, fibroids or adhesions are found, an operative hysteroscopy may be performed the same day or scheduled for another time to remove the growths. The hysteroscope gives the gynecologist a clear view of the uterine walls and tissue while surgically removing the growths. The surgical instruments are inserted through the hysteroscope to perform the excisions.

Hysteroscopy can take anywhere from a few minutes up to an hour, depending on whether operative procedures are performed. This is an outpatient procedure – even if operative hysteroscopy is performed, most patients will go home after a period of observation. Light bleeding or cramping may occur for a few days after hysteroscopy.

If you have a uterine condition that needs diagnosis or treatment, hysteroscopy may be recommended. To schedule an exam or consultation, contact our gynecology team at FEM Women’s Wellness. We can book your appointment at our clinic in the Carson City, Reno and Lake Tahoe, NV, area.
