Uterine fibroids can result in heavy periods, pelvic discomfort and fertility issues. If uterine fibroids are causing symptoms and non-surgical treatments are ineffective, surgical removal may be recommended. A myomectomy is a surgery that can remove the uterine fibroids while leaving the uterus intact. This is recommended for women who may still want to have children. Our GYN team at FEM Women’s Wellness offers myomectomy procedures at our facility in the Lake Tahoe, Reno and Carson City, NV, area.
Women who have symptomatic uterine fibroids can undergo a complete hysterectomy or removal of the uterus for relief. However, those who want to retain their uterus to bear children can choose a myomectomy over a hysterectomy. This gynecology procedure can remove the fibroids from within the uterus, preserving the possibility of pregnancy in the future.
Myomectomy can be performed in various ways, from open abdominal surgery and laparoscopic procedures to transvaginal fibroid removal. The method used depends on the size of the uterus as well as the number and sizes of fibroids to be removed. Our gynecologists at FEM Women’s Wellness will determine the best method of myomectomy for each patient.
Uterine Fibroids Removal Surgery
Conventional myomectomy procedures are performed with open surgery. The incision for open surgery is either made horizontally below the bikini line or vertically in the lower abdomen. This allows access to the uterus for removal of the fibroids, similar to performing a c-section during childbirth. Laparoscopic and robotic myomectomy procedures are also used, which have smaller incisions for quicker healing and fewer complication risks post-surgery.
If you have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids that are causing distressing symptoms or infertility, myomectomy may be a treatment option. Our gynecologists at FEM Women’s Wellness can discuss whether this procedure may be an option for your situation and what types of surgery are available for removal of your fibroids. Myomectomy, like all surgeries, comes with risks and it is not guaranteed that new uterine fibroids will not appear after the procedure.
