There are female reproductive conditions that may be best treated with removal of the reproductive organs. Cancer, endometriosis, fibroids, uterine prolapse and chronic pelvic pain are some of the reasons women may consider a hysterectomy or removal of the uterus. In some cases, a total abdominal hysterectomy is recommended, where the cervix and uterus are removed. At FEM Women’s Wellness, we can perform a total abdominal hysterectomy for patients through our clinic in the Reno and Lake Tahoe, NV, area.
Removing both the uterus and cervix in a total abdominal hysterectomy is a major decision. It can be an effective treatment for many types of pelvic pain or menstrual problems, but it also ends the ability to have children. In the case of cancer, a total abdominal hysterectomy may be the only solution to stop the cancer from spreading. However, for other conditions like fibroids, endometriosis or irregular periods, other less invasive treatments are usually recommended first before considering a hysterectomy.
Abdominal Hysterectomy Options
When a total abdominal hysterectomy is recommended, there are a few ways this procedure can be performed. The traditional method is open surgery with either a horizontal or vertical incision in the lower abdomen. The type of incision used depends on various factors, including why the hysterectomy is being performed and the size of the uterus. While a horizontal incision is more discreet, a vertical incision is best when the surgeon needs to remove a larger uterus or is performing exploration during the procedure.
Total abdominal hysterectomy can also be performed laparoscopically with the DaVinci® robotic system. This is a less invasive surgery with smaller incisions for faster healing and fewer post-surgery risks. Not all patients will be good candidates for robotic total abdominal hysterectomy, but it is a desirable option for those who qualify.
