How Does Botox Work?
Botox is a neuromodulator that affects muscle movement. It is a purified neurotoxin that can be safely injected into a muscle to make it relax and stop contracting. Botox was first FDA approved in 1989 for treatment of eye spasms, stopping the contraction of the muscles around the eyes that can spasm or create crossed-eyes. The same mechanism that relaxes spasming muscles can help smooth away certain lines and wrinkles on the face.
Botox injections are used for a variety of cosmetic treatments. First and foremost, it can smooth the frown lines that appear between the eyebrows and the lines on the forehead (worry lines). These lines appear from scrunching your eyebrows together and become more noticeable as you get older. Botox can soften the “11s” between the brows and the worry lines on the forehead. It can also smooth crow’s feet and offer other aesthetic benefits for the face, lips and neck.
Botox Treatments
Botox injections only take about 15 minutes to perform. A tiny amount of neuromodulator is injected into the desired muscles at our office. There is no downtime required – you can go back to work or other activities after the treatment. Botox has minimal side effects – the most common are redness or swelling from the injections, which go away in the days following treatment.
Botox injections take a few days for the effects to appear, usually within a week. The lines or wrinkles begin to soften as the muscle contractions stop creasing the skin. Most patients will be able to enjoy the results from Botox treatment for 3-4 months before the effects wear off.
